Samsung Dryer Not Starting? What to Check

Quick answer: Check power and the child lock first. Next, test the door switch and thermal fuse.

Work from the simple checks to the parts. Many no-start problems are found in the first few steps.

Safety first: unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) before you open any panel. If you’re not comfortable testing parts, call a qualified technician.

1. Power

Make sure the plug is seated and the breaker is on. If the display is completely blank, the problem is power or the control board.

2. Child lock

If the child lock is on, the Start button won’t work. Samsung says to hold the two buttons marked for Child Lock for about 3 seconds, or unplug the dryer (or switch off its breaker) for 60 seconds. Then touch and hold Start.

3. Door switch

If the door isn’t detected as closed, the dryer won’t run. Test the switch for continuity.

4. Thermal fuse

On many Samsung dryers a blown thermal fuse stops the motor, so the dryer won’t start. Test it, and clean the vent before you replace it.

5. Belt and motor

If you hear the motor but the drum doesn’t turn, check the belt. If the motor only hums, it may need replacing.

Official help for this problem

Check your model’s manual. Steps, error codes and parts can differ between models, so your manual has the final word. Find your owner’s manual free on Samsung’s US support site by searching your model number.
