GE Dryer Not Starting? What to Check (and the Parts That Fix It)

Quick answer: Check the plug, breaker and control lock. If those are fine, test the door switch and thermal fuse: they’re common causes of no-start problems on GE dryers.

A GE dryer that won’t start usually has a simple cause. Start with the free checks, then move on to parts.

Safety first: unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) before you open any panel. If you’re not comfortable testing parts, call a qualified technician.

1. Power and settings

  • Make sure the plug is fully seated and the breaker is on.
  • Check whether a lock or control-lock feature is on. Your manual shows how to turn it off.
  • Press and hold Start for a second or two. Some models need a firm press.

2. Door switch

If the dryer doesn’t sense the door is shut, it won’t start. Listen for a click when you close the door, and test the switch for continuity.

3. Start switch

On knob-and-button models, the start switch can wear out. Test it for continuity while pressed.

4. Thermal fuse

On many GE dryers the thermal fuse also cuts power to the motor, so a blown fuse means no start. Test it and clean the vent before replacing it.

5. Drive belt

If the motor hums or runs but the drum doesn’t move, the belt may be broken. Spin the drum by hand: if it turns very freely, the belt is likely snapped.

6. Drive motor

If you hear a hum but nothing turns, and the belt is fine, the motor may have failed. Replace it only after ruling out the cheaper parts.
